It's Automatic with Jessica Mauboy on 3KND

Jessica Mauboy is one of Australia's most successful performing artist, actress, songwriter, mentor and Community Ambassador on Indigenous creativity spanning art, fashion and design just to name a few. Jess is also from Darwin, her mother has roots in two Indigenous tribes, the Wakaman and the KuKu Yalanji, who lived around the cape of Far North Queensland. Jessica's father is from Timor. This lady just doesn’t slow down for apart from all those activities Jess is the dynamic, passionate and Respected coach on “The Voice”. Jessica Mauboy joins me this morning on Big Brekkie 3KND KoolNDeadly. So tune in after 8am to listen to this multitalented woman. Big thank you to Karen Black for making this happen.

Jessica has toured with Beyoncé, collaborated with Ricky Martin, Flo Rida, Snoop Dogg and Pitbull, performed for Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and made history being the first non-European solo artist to represent Australia as a guest performer at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 and so much more.

Fresh off the back of her sold out national Boss Lady Tour, one of the country’s most celebrated and loved R&B-pop entertainers, Jessica Mauboy is back in the driver’s seat with new single and video for “Automatic”. Launched off the back of Jess’s TV performance of previous single “Glow” last night on The Voice, where she has been bringing her wealth of experience into her role as a coach for 2022.

Produced by George Reid (AlunaGeorge) and written with Cosmos Midnight and Sophie Curtis (aston), “Automatic” is a tasteful pop anthem that leans into Jess’s RnB and soul influences.

Speaking to the track, Jess notes “Automatic is about having faith in your own sense of direction and firmly taking the driver’s seat in all aspects of your life. Believe in your intuition and don’t be afraid to give yourself permission to explore that - the little voice in your head is usually always right. It was a serious blast to hit the studio with George Reid (AlunaGeorge) & co-writers Cosmos Midnight and Sophie Curtis (Aston) to make this song.”

“Automatic” comes alongside an incredible new visual, directed by Bill Bleakley and features Jess in a completely new light. The boss lady energy has been brought to the forefront with this clip. Growing up riding quadbikes on her Aunties property in Darwin, it seemed only fitting to incorporate bikes to help bring this song to life visually.

“Automatic is such a fun and energetic song, I knew I wanted to go big with this video and to allow fans to see me in a way they had never seen me before” says Jess on the video.“ Growing up in the open bush lands of Darwin, driving Dad's ute and riding quad bikes with my friends and family, I couldn’t resist hitting the dirt to bring that boss lady energy to the track.”

Director Bill Bleakley adding “After hearing Jess rides quadbikes in the Northern Territory–it was an easy choice to centre the clip around quad biking. Although we didn’t shoot in the desert due to logistical reasons, we chose a location with red earth palette to match this. The whole team was excited to shoot the entire clip-on film, and we shot a combination of cinematic 35mm for the performances and gritty 16mmfor the quadbike stuff. Working with Jess was an absolute pleasure–she’s such a legend and down to do anything. A highlight of the shoot was seeing Jess stay back late to personally take dinner to the lighting team who were packing up after dark”

“Automatic” is the follow up track to last year’s summer anthem “Glow” which saw Mauboy looking into her future – and embracing what she sees there. “Glow” also marked the first new music since her 2019 ARIA #1 album Hilda and her debut release on Warner Music Australia
